The Sullivan County Historical Society.
The SCHS was organized November 18, 1974, in the First National Bank meeting room with thirty-four in attendance. Officers elected at that time were; President, Robert Wilson; Vice President, Marritt Page; Secretary, Brenda Williams; Treasurer, John R. (Bob) Phillips.
Three main projects of the Society are the Museum, Genealogy Library, and Depot. In 1979 the top floor of the old Courthouse (across from the Hotel Stanley) was leased to the Society for the purpose of starting a County Museum. In 1985, the Society purchased the building from the County and at this time it houses the Genealogy Library, as well as the Museum.
The Museum contains eight rooms of County memorabilia from the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries. The Genealogy Library occupies two rooms and among its holdings are funeral home records, cemetery records, some rural school records, family histories, and much more. The Museum Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
The Depot, located on East Third Street, is one of the best preserved depots in the State. It appears much as it did when the last passenger and freight passed through it. Stored in the Freight Room is the bed of a Conestoga wagon used by an early Sullivan County family. Adjacent to the Depot, and on a short railroad track, is a caboose which enhances the historical atmosphere.
